Deepin GTK Theme for Ubuntu & Linux Mint

I've uploaded the theme and icons from the Deepin Linux distribution to my launchpad PPA. You can install the theme from the PPA if you are using Ubuntu/Linux Mint or its derivates.

Open a terminal window (CTRL+ALT+T) and run the following commands:

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install deepin-gtk-theme deepin-icon-theme faenza-icon-theme

Run the following to update the GTK icon cache: (optional step, improves system performance)

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Deepin"
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Faenza"
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Faenza-Ambiance"
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Faenza-Dark"
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Faenza-Darker"
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Faenza-Darkest"
sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f "/usr/share/icons/Faenza-Radiance"

Current theme can be changed with the following commands:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme "Deepin" # controls
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme "Deepin" # icons
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences theme "Deepin" # window borders

Deepin is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 13.04. The theme is very similar to Windows 7

  1. i have been using ubuntu for the last two years but still consider myself a novice, i have so much data in my system and softwares, if i have to install again due to a formatting i willl have along term headache.

i am conversant basic terminal, but some of the commands given by you will frighten me, in case something goes wrong. i like deepin desktop, just like unity, gnome, and lxde which i use regularly. please clear my fears.

  2. None of the commands given above are harmful in any way :)

These packages will only install the theme. It won't install the Deepin desktop. You will still be using Unity desktop but the themes will be set to Deepin.

You can skip the commands for re-building the GTK icon cache. It's not required.

For changing the current theme, you can use a GUI tool like Ubuntu Tweak or the 'Appearance' tab in Ubuntu system settings. I find it easier to use terminal commands since its faster than using a GUI.

In case of any issues with the Deepin theme you can revert to the default Ubuntu theme by running the following:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface.gtk-theme "Ambiance" # controls
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface.icon-theme "ubuntu-mono-dark" # icons
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.theme "Ambiance" # window borders
